Introduction: Seniors, as with most of us, become comfortable with their current bed. However, mattresses eventually need replacement and this change is often used as an opportunity to raise the bed to make it more convenient to get in and out. Unfortunately, it also makes it more likely that the senior will fall getting in and out and more difficult for a caregiver to assist the senior.
In addition to minimizing the risk of falling by bed selection, good lighting is important. The light should be easy to turn on at night and there should be good lighting from the bedroom to the bathroom.
Below is a nightstand lamp with a touch base for ease of turning it on and off.

Bed Height: If the bed is too low, it is difficult to get into and out of. If too high, the chance of injury from a fall is greatly increased. A soft mat can reduce the impact but the best solution is to change to a bed that can easily be raised and lowered. Using the mattress change opportunity as an opportunity to replace the bed itself is sometimes effective, particularly as current mattress design is to make them thicker than in the past.
Hospital type electric beds are not particularly attractive and they suggest to the senior a hospital environment. We found an adjustable bed that is mofd aesthetically pleasing. It is shown below.

Humidity Control: An important addition to the bedroom in dry climates particularly in the winter is a humidifier.
Commentary: Although console models are larger than tabletops, they can still be moved from room to room. Console models use evaporative technology so a large, powerful fan blows a strong air stream across water, generating lots of moist air. Since a console can humidify more than one room, it allows more options for unobtrusive placement provided an electric outlet is available. A console's larger tank needs less frequent refills, but it is more cumbersome to handle.

Commentary: If a smaller, quieter humidifier is preferred, then a table top model has a smaller fan. A fan evaporative model is less likely to cause growth of bacteria or fungus than a warm evaporative model although the warm model may not have a fan and therefore be quieter.
Crane Humidifier Personal Cool Mist
These portable models cost the least and are fine for humidifying a single room, but their small tank requires frequent refills. Evaporative tabletops use a fan to blow air over a wet wick, while warm-mist models use a heating unit to boil water before cooling the steam.

Introduction: Standing length mirrors or floor mirrors (also known as "cheval mirrors" or "free standing mirrors.") are used mainly in the bedroom.
